I am bread game tweaks7/11/2023 It’s an easy to establish goal in every environment. So I found the idea of a being a slice a bread who wanted to become toast quite easy for the player to kind of get their heads around. Rather than, ‘Oh, we’ll start with a control stick and a jump button’. I don’t have an answer yet, but… So, essentially I wanted to approach something that’s an interesting challenge to control, because I always think of something I’d want to be… and then try and think of the controls from there. GC: I hate to start with the obvious question, but I can’t not ask it: how did you come up with this idea? Release Date: 3rd December 2014 (Early Access) Not just about I Am Bread itself, but the company’s other games, and the increasing importance and popularity of indie games in general… One example we’re given is of the bathroom level, where the difficulty of staying edible is increased and where there is no jam or toasters – only hair gel and hairdryers.īefore leaving developer Bossa Games thoroughly impressed by the whole endeavour we sat down to speak to game designer Luke Williams and co-founder Henrique Olifiers. But instead we start asking questions about subsequent levels, and discover that they’re not all set in the kitchen. And we’re consoled with assurances that we’ve done a lot better than most people on their first few goes.ĭespite the failure we certainly enjoyed ourselves and frankly would’ve been more than happy to continue on until we’d beaten it. We struggle several times with climbing up the side of the fridge, since moving vertically is much more difficult here a single mistake in which button you keep pressed down can see you tumbling back down to the floor.īut on our third attempt we edge across the front of the fridge and can see our goal loom tantalisingly closer, until… disaster! It hadn’t occurred to us that we’re climbing around on the freezer door and as we get further along our weight causes it to swing open, sending us careening backwards and with a sudden loss of grip down onto the floor and miserable failure!Īt this point it’s only the sound behind us, of multiple teeth being sucked, that we realise our efforts have drawn quite a crowd from the rest of the office. For example, getting onto a countertop is best achieved by knocking over a chair and climbing up it.Īpart from the ants the major obstacle in the kitchen level we played was the fridge, which blocks access to the other side of the counter – where the ascendency of the toaster awaits. The game’s simple graphics and physics are made in Unity but they are, in their own way, quite realistic. On our first few goes we simply staggered around like a drunk trying to remember how to walk, but after a few minutes experimentation you begin to get the idea and start forming strategies.
